Big Spring Clean

Thursday, 13 May 2010

Year 4 pupils took part in the ‘Great Spring Clean’ organised by Sandwell Council and Tipton Litterwatch.

Equiped with high visibility jackets, litter pickers, gloves and a variety of bags, the children were split into squads by the organiser, Lindsay Richmond and sent out into the locality of the school to embark on a tidy up of Hateley Heath.

Prior to the event the children learned about different sorts of rubbish, the impact it has on the environment and how rubbish is recycled. At the end of the afternoon the children had collected 16 bags of rubbish, much of it recyclable and were amazed at how much waste there was.

Everyone received medals and have also completed posters and poetry in school to compliment the activity. We await in anticipation to see if we have won any prizes.

Coin Trail

Thursday, 6 May 2010

Year 4 pupils took part in two fundraising events to raise money for the Catholic Charity Father Hudson’s Society, on which we were focussing.

On Thursday all of the class raided their piggy banks (and probably their parents’ too) to bring in as much loose change as they could. This was used to create a coin trail on the school yard. When the trail was complete it was measured and was over 80m long and contained just over £60 of 1p and 2p coins.

On Friday the class took part in a series of sponsored sporting challenges – working in pairs seeing how many of a range of skills they could do in two minutes before changing over. These included skips, tennis rallies, penalty shoot outs, assault course and many more. The children had a great time and certainly got fit.

Money is still coming in but the two events combined raised well over £100 for Fr Hudson’s.

We were very proud of the effort and enthusiasm of the class. They were keen to organise and take part in the events, especially as they missed out on the ‘odd shoe day’ done by the rest of the school the previous week for the same cause as they were on a school trip.
