Music @ SJB Autumn term 2016

Friday, 16 December 2016

It has been a very busy and noisy term in the music lessons at school!

In Y1 we have been using percussion instruments to make sounds to represent the characters from The Gruffalo story…

In Y2 we have been learning all about the many instruments we have in our school. We have learnt what they are called, how to play them and what sort of sound they make…

Then we used an iPad app to create a baook to tell KS1 and the EYFS all about these instruments!

In Y3 we learnt songs from the 4 countries of the UK. We loved Knees up Mother Brown the best!

In Y4 we have been finding out about riff and ostinato. We used percussion instruments to build a repeated musical pattern. Then we discovered the pentatonic scale and used the chime bars to compose a repeated melody to a 4 beat backing rhythm!

In Y5 we have been using  the percussion instruments to compose and perform textured rhythmic pieces. We used symbols to record our compositions, reherased in our groups and then performed for the class.

In Y6 we began to look at printed notational music and tried to read it to play tunes on the xylophones…it was really hard!

On Chritmas Fair day we turned Y6 into a karaoke classroom. Lots of us enjoyed a good christmas singsong and certainly spread some cheer…

Brushstrokes Christmas Toy Appeal

Thursday, 15 December 2016

This Christmas we decided that we wanted to help those children and families who do not have the luxury of being able to go out and buy lots of toys.

We went home and together with the help of our families, we collected lots of great new and used toys which we could give away.

They were all organised in to the hall and there were loads of them! We have been super kind and generous this Christmas.

Mr McNally from the Brushstrokes came in to receive them on behalf of the charity. He was so surprised and happy and he thanked all of us and explained what a difference it will make.

As we prepare for advent, it is important that we help others. John the Baptist talked about making paths straight in order to prepare for the Lord. That means, leading good lives and helping others.

KS2 Carol Concert

Thursday, 15 December 2016

Today KS2 held their annual Carol Concert.

Mrs Woolls worked really hard with the choir who sang a few of the songs on their own having practiced them on a Friday afternoon. The rest of the Key Stage also joined in with the rest of the songs.

The readers did a fantastic job of telling the story. The highlight of the event was arguably the brass band performance by a group of six girls.

A big thank you to Mrs Woolls for her hard work in preparing and delivering the event. Well done to all of the children involved and thank you to all of those who came to watch and support us.

Santa Breakfast

Monday, 12 December 2016

This morning St John Bosco had a special visitor for breakfast! Santa was here giving out presents to all of the children. Thank-you to everyone who joined us for our Santa breakfast this year. A big thank you to Deb and Jo for making the lovely breakfast and all the staff who helped with the set-up and running of the event.

Christmas Fayre

Saturday, 10 December 2016

On Friday 9th December we held our annual Christmas Fayre. This year was a little different as we had activities all morning for the children to get involved with including making cards, decorations, wreaths, reindeer food, biscuits, etc as well as Christmas films, karaoke and face painting. All of the children had a fantastic time.

In the afternoon, the Fayre opened up to parents to join us. Y6 ran all of the stalls and did a fantastic job.

All of the money raised will be spent on improving our school for the children. School Council will be meeting after Christmas to discuss ideas for what to spend the money on.

Y3/4 Cricket

Wednesday, 7 December 2016

Our cricket team went to Tipton Sports Academy on Thursday to take part in the Sandwell schools tournament against fifteen other schools.

We played incredibly well and so managed to win our group by beating three other teams. This meant that we progressed into the Quarter Finals where we beat St Philip’s. In the Semi Final we played against Lodge and again due to our excellent fielding we managed to win.

In the final we met a very strong Abbey Juniors side. Unfortunately, we lost by 6 runs meaning that we finished 2nd overall.

Congratulations to the whole team and a special well done to Cayden, our player of the tournament. 2nd place out of 16 schools was a fantastic achievement.

Girls’ Football

Wednesday, 7 December 2016

On Wednesday we took part in the first round of a football tournament to try to win a place at finals night. We competed against four other schools and managed to win all of our matches. In total we scored nine goals and only conceded one.

Congratulations to all those involved and good luck in the finals.
