Girls win 8-1

Sunday, 23 September 2012

St John Bosco Girls’ Football team played their first match of the season on Friday with a friendly fixture against Leamore Primary School.

For many of the girls it was their first ever competitive football match and so they were extremely excited!

Bosco got off to a flying start and their team spirit and determination was rewarded with an early lead; Sinead Slade justifying her role as a striker by scoring her first goal for Bosco and Captain, Abbie Humphries giving Bosco a quick 2-0 advantage.

Good passing and high intensity work rate from Taylor Pedley helped produce two more goals for Bosco before half time with Abbie Stambridge scoring a cracking goal from distance and Ellie Whitehouse expertly finishing from close range for her first ever Bosco goal. However, Leamore did grab one back before half time, Agata unlucky to concede in the Bosco goal.

The second half saw Bosco continue to dominate the game. With Miss Ellicott now taking over as a referee, Elliot Hill and Luke Whitehouse took up the role as joint managers. Their job was to make substitiutions, give tactical advice to the girls and ensure they were giving plenty of encouragement. The boys did a terrific job so thankyou very much!

During the second half Abbie Humphries completed her hat trick and Maicie Golding got on the score sheet with a super finish from a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. In the dying seconds, Abbie H rounded off a fantastic performance with her 4th goal of the game.

The game ended 8-1 to Bosco who were delighted with both the result and performance.

Thanks to Mr Mobberley and Leamore for coming over and playing the game in a sporting and friendly way. The girls were a credit to their school.

Well done to all of the Bosco girls who played really well – Abbie H, Abbie S, Angelee, Agata, Demi, Georgia, Taylor, Charlie, Maicie, Ellie W and Sinead.

Thankyou to all of the parents who helped set up and put away the goals; Mr and Mrs Whitehouse, Mr and Mrs Hill, Mr Davies, Mrs Butler and anybody else that I’ve forgotten. Also thankyou to all of the people that came to support the girls, including Miss Joyce and Mrs Finnegan (though she didn’t get out of the car because she didn’t want to ruin her hair!).

After a result like this, the girls are looking ahead to what promises to be another successful season!

Bosco watch England smash Croatia!

Thursday, 20 September 2012

A group of children, parents and teachers headed down the road to the Bescot Stadium, Walsall to watch England women take on Croatia in a Euros Qualifying game. A win for England would see them progress to the finals as group winners.

Before the match began there was plenty of activities, all free, for the children to do including a reactions game (which Abbie Humphries won for her age group, earning her a t-shirt), inflatables and some 5 aside football as well as the opportunity to have face painting and get photos with a very impressive league winners trophy.

The match saw England dominate throughout and they eventually came out convincing 3-0 winners. They played some cracking football and look a very strong side.

A great night was topped off by a lap of honour from the England players who stopped and signed autographs and posed for photos with the children. The two England players pictured below with the children are Steph Houghton (who scored three times for Team GB during the Olympic Games) and Karen Bardsley (England and Team GB goalkeeper).

Netball Champions!

Sunday, 16 September 2012

St John Bosco continued where they left off last year with another Netballing success! Bosco are the current Black Country Netball Champions and they showed exactly why with a dominant performance in St Joseph’s annual tournament.

The first match was against St Joseph’s, Hednesford which was won 6-0 with excellent attacking play from Elliot Butler and Taylor Pedley. In equally convincing fashion, Bosco saw off Littleton Green in the second match, this time winning 7-0 to win their group and progress through to the semi finals.

St Joseph’s, Rugeley, the host school, were Bosco’s next challengers and again this proved to be a very one sided game with a 7-0 win for Bosco.

Up until this point, no opposition player had even made it far enough to have a shot against us as our defending in the middle third from Agata,  Dylan Harvey and Lukas Vetrak was simply outstanding.

Fulfen School had also progressed with relative ease to the final so we were expecting a tough battle if we were to take home the trophy. However, this proved not to be the case, as once again Bosco lifted their game. Luke dominated the game in the centre and Elliot and Taylor were ruthless in attack so we came out 9-0 winners.

Our record from the tournament: Played 4, won 4, scored 29, conceded 0!

All 6 players were exceptional! This promises to be another successful season for our Netball team!

Paralympic Goalball

Friday, 14 September 2012

As part of Class Six’s Olympic topic, we have been playing Goalball – a Paralympic sport.

Goalball is a blind sport where teams of 3 compete against each other to try to throw a ball with a bell (so it can be heard) into their opponents goal. Players must listen carefully to the ball in order to try to save it from going in their goal.

We’ve had a brilliant time playing and learning about how skilled these Paralympians are to be able to play this sport as well as they do. We really have been inspired!

Some of the class proved to be decent players, though a few caused great laughter by throwing the ball straight at team mates or even throwing the ball in completely the wrong direction!

Football vs Leamore

Friday, 14 September 2012

On Monday St John Bosco played 2 football matches against Leamore Primary School.

The first team, captained by Elliot Butler, got off to a great start with a goal from Elliot from an Alfie Harwood throughball. Bosco made it 3 before half time with Elliot completing his hat-trick after good work in midfield from Josh Harris and Doyle.

The 2nd half was a little more even, with Leamore pulling one goal back before Player of the Match, Elliot, grabbed his 4th goal of the game to make the final score Bosco 4 – 1 Leamore.

The 2nd game was a tighter affair and so this time the teams were goaless at half time. Bosco, captained by Dylan Harvey, were playing the better football though and squandered numerous chances. Leamore were unlucky not to nick the lead, but Agata, the Bosco goalkepper, pulled off a couple of cracking saves. This seemed to inspire the Bosco team and Player of the Match, Elliot Hill scored two goals in quick succession to make it 2-0 to Bosco. Leamore managed to score a debatable last second goal but it didn’t spoil the outcome as Bosco came out 2-1 winners.

Well done to all 21 players who took part in the matches. For many of them it was their first ever competitive football match.
