St John Bosco Teaching School Alliance

Diabetes Awareness Day

On Tuesday 24th April, we set aside time to learn about diabetes in order to raise awareness and educate others about this condition. Three of our pupils have Type 1 diabetes so it is important that their peers know a bit about it. Prior to the day, many children completed research and submitted posters for a competition. The best ones are now displayed around school. We also dressed in blue and gold to represent the colours of the charity Diabetes UK and also the club colours of Worcester Warriors, who Chris Pennell plays for. Chris came to meet class 5 a few weeks ago to discuss his experiences of type 1 diabetes whilst managing a family and a career in professional rugby, showing that diabetes shouldn’t prevent anyone from doing the things they want to do.

In the afternoon, class 5 delivered a whole school assembly to educate everyone about diabetes. The assembly included awarding our 8 prize winners from our poster competition with goodies kindly donated by Diabetes UK and rugby gear signed by Chris Pennell. It is safe to say that the assembly was very educational and the children were very responsive.

Finally, all children brought in a small donation to Diabetes UK. We are yet to know the final total but this will soon be sent off to the charity to assist them with their continued research. A big thank you to everyone involved in the day.
