Cup Final

On Friday we competed in the Birmingham schools cup final at Aston Villa’s training ground, Bodymoor Heath. Having won two previous tournaments to reach this stage, we had already surpassed all expectations for the season so were very proud to be playing in the final.

We took a coach full of supporters to cheer us on.

We arrived nice and early to soak up the surroundings and have a good warm-up.

Once the game kicked off, it was a very even 1st half. Sacred Heart were given a debatable penalty which Oskar saved well. We had a couple of decent chances and commanded the ball in midfield. We were perhaps a little unfortunate to go into half-time still goalless.

We started the 2nd half well and had a couple of chances but the Sacred Heart goalkeeper played really well. They broke away against the run of play and won a penalty which, once again, Oskar saved by diving brilliantly to his right-hand side and tipping the ball wide of his post. However, they built on that attack and continued to pressure our goal for the next few minutes, eventually getting their reward with a well-taken goal.

However, we fought back and with two minutes to go, Remari won the ball in midfield and gave it to Mati who still had it all to do. He took the ball around two Sacred Heart defenders and drilled it into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. Our huge crowd cheered our well-deserved equaliser.

With seconds left, we were on the attack but their defender intercepted a through ball and played a long pass down the pitch to their striker who coolly collected the ball and finished it well to give his team a 2-1 victory.

Our boys played extremely well and were very unlucky to lose the game 2-1.

We’ve had a fantastic season and can be very proud of our achievements.

Well done to Oskar for winning player of the match for his two penalty saves as well as making a few other stops and bravely throwing himself at striker’s feet to cut out one-on-one opportunities.
