That’s it then – Year 6 have gone (and me too) but it was a great end of term – the prom on Saturday was followed by a BBQ on Monday despite the rain, 3 amazing performances of “Reach for the Sky” on Tuesday and a farewell Mass and assembly on Wednesday. We’ll all be meeting up again for various things including sport and visit to The Sealife Centre but as a fully fledged St John Bosco class and teacher – that’s all folks. Great memories and fantastic futures await.

St John Bosco Catholic Primary School in West Bromwich are celebrating after been rated as being outstanding in all areas following their recent OFSTED inspection.

The school was inspected in mid February by a team of three inspectors led by David Lewis. They spent two days in the school, observing lessons, interviewing children, staff and parents, looking at children’s work, spending time on the playground and canteen and looking at routines, safety, behavior, extra curricular activities and much more besides.

At the end of the two days the school was graded in the 4 categories of achievement, quality of teaching, leadership and behavior and safety and everyone concerned was absolutely thrilled when a judgment of outstanding was given in not one but all 4 of these areas.

During the visit the inspectors commented favorably on many aspects of life at St John Bosco School among which were; the fact that every single lesson they observed was either good or outstanding, the fantastic behavior and manners of all the pupils at all times, the knowledge and skills of the children using computer technology, the outstanding results achieved at the end of Year 6 (which are among the best in the country), the range of school trips and activities on offer, the links with the community and parish churches, provision for children’s individual needs, the way adults support children and children help one another through initiatives such as reading buddies, ICT wizards and Year 6 prefects and the huge amount of teamwork and the caring collaborative approach at all levels.

Everyone at St John Bosco was delighted with the findings of Mr Lewis and his team, which confirmed what they already knew, that it is a truly fantastic school to be part of. The outcome of the inspection meant that the school is among the top 4% of schools nationally and the very first school in Sandwell and the first Catholic School in the West Midlands to be rated as outstanding in all areas since the current format of inspections began. This was even more of an achievement as the school was graded as just satisfactory in the previous inspection, a little under 3 years ago.

Headteacher of St John Bosco, Ed Masterson said; “ I am thrilled with the amazing achievement of being classed as outstanding in all areas by OFSTED. To move from being a satisfactory school to an outstanding one in 2 years 10 months is simply incredible. This is down to the enthusiasm, hard work and dedication of the teachers, support staff, parents, governors and of course our fantastic children. I would also like to thank our parish priests, everyone from the Archdiocese of Birmingham and Sandwell for the unwavering support they have given”

In June St John Bosco Primary School celebrates it’s golden jubilee with a range of celebration events planned. The OFSTED report is a brilliant way to begin this special year and there is no doubt it will continue to go from strength to strength in the next 50 years.

Year 6 prefects and their younger friends celebrate the result

School Bank

Wednesday, 22 February 2012

St John Bosco Primary School in West Bromwich have proudly opened their school bank today in association with HSBC. The facility enables pupils of the school to deposit and withdraw money, earn interest and manage their own account by passbook or cashcard in the case of Year 6 pupils.

The school bank was the idea of Mrs Marie Powell who works at HSBC and is also a governor and a parent at St John Bosco School. Along with headteacher Mr Masterson she interviewed, selected and trained pupils from Year 5 to be the bank’s employees and after a rigorous process the roles including manager, cashier and publicity officer were allocated. They can be identified by their distinctive bank uniforms they wear whilst on duty.

The school bank runs on a weekly basis and has proved to be very popular in it’s opening week. It teaches children the value and importance of saving, how to manage their money lessons that are important throught their whole lives ahead.
